Varsity Gold Triumphs in Season Opener Against St. Rita

Crestwood, IL – September 14, 2024 – Varsity Gold kicked off their hockey season on a high note with a 3-2 victory over the Catholic League powerhouse St. Rita on Saturday. The exhibition match, held at Southwest Ice Arena, showcased the team’s strong start and competitive spirit.

Lincoln-Way struck first with an unassisted goal from Jack Drozdek at 12:22 of the first period. The lead was extended by Cam Malecha, who netted his first goal of the season with less than a minute remaining in the third period. Malecha’s goal was assisted by Drozdek and Marty McCauley. AJ Hull added another to Lincoln-Way’s tally just over six minutes into the second period.

Despite St. Rita’s efforts to close the gap with two late goals, Varsity Gold held firm to secure the win. Goaltenders Ryan Sullivan and Blake Lord shared duties between the pipes, contributing to the team’s solid defensive performance.

Looking ahead, Varsity Gold will face the Dupage Stars later today at Seven Bridges in their Illinois West Season opener. The team aims to build on this strong start as they continue their campaign.
