Varsity Triumphs Over Sandburg in High-Scoring Affair
Orland Park, IL - In an exhilarating matchup at Arctic Ice Arena last night, the LW Varsity hockey team showcased their prowess on the ice with a commanding 7-3 victory against Sandburg. The game opened with a bang as Luke Riechers found the back of the net just 2 minutes and 28 seconds into the first period, with Colin Lassiter earning the assist.
Following Riechers' early strike, Jimmy Maurer quickly extended the lead, scoring another goal with help from Max Angsten. However, just as LW seemed to be gaining momentum, Sandburg responded with a power play goal with only 14 seconds remaining in the first period, ending the period with LW ahead 2-1.
The second period continued to deliver action, with both teams exchanging goals. Colin Lassiter got on the scoresheet next, scoring with assists from Riechers and Quinten Lange. Sandburg kept the pressure on, netting another goal little over three minutes later. In a quick response, Riechers struck again less than 20 seconds later for his second goal of the night, assisted by Lassiter and Lange, solidifying LW's lead at 4-2. Sandburg added a final goal in the period, heading into the third period only one goal behind at 4-3.
The final period was dominated by LW, as they showcased their offensive firepower. Marty McCauley was the first to strike, scoring an unassisted goal to extend the lead. Jimmy Maurer then added another to the tally, this time assisted by AJ Hull. The crowning moment of the game came when Luke Riechers completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal, set up by Lange, who recorded his third assist of the night.
Ryan Sullivan delivered a solid performance in net, stopping 24 of the shots he faced, helping to secure the victory for the LW Varsity team.
